Thierry Martenon
enquire informationBorn in 1967 in the heart of the French Alps, Thierry Martenon has always been deeply connected to nature. He lives and works in the Désert d’Entremont, an isolated village within the Chartreuse Massif, where the silence and raw beauty of the landscape shape his artistic vision. A self-taught sculptor, he transforms wood into abstract, textured compositions that interact with light and shadow, blurring the line between material and movement.
Working exclusively with wood from the surrounding forests, Martenon, a self-taught sculptor, carves using traditional tools—chisels, planes, and files—yet his approach is unmistakably contemporary. His vertical totems and monumental wall panels are etched, hatched, and sculpted into rhythmic surfaces, revealing the organic soul of the material. Rejecting figurative representation, his work speaks a universal, tactile language, where texture and form invite quiet contemplation.
Today, his sculptures are celebrated by leading institutions and collectors worldwide, crossing borders and oceans. Yet Martenon remains rooted in his secluded environment, following an introspective, vertical path—one shaped by nature, tools, and the timeless essence of wood.
