In Surface And Depth #237, dark water appears to move over a paler, sand-coloured ground. Guillaume Grando composes the work in layers of acrylic and resin on a rigid support, then sands and sculpts the surface so that its relief reproduces ripples and their reflections. The contrast between black passages and ochre ones suggests varying depth, as when the seabed shows through shallow water, yet the image remains abstract and without horizon. The artist has worked with resin since 2011, drawn to its capacity for chance, gloss, reflection and depth. Each work in the series fixes a state of water that, in nature, lasts only an instant.
