Surface And Depth #128 belongs to the darker register of Guillaume Grando's series. Deep blue-grey and near-black tones recall water under low light, where the surface is read mainly through the highlights it carries. Those highlights are produced by relief: layers of acrylic and resin are sanded and sculpted until they behave like a liquid surface, changing as the person looking moves. Colour is held back so that light does most of the work. At 120 x 80 cm, the composition has no horizon or focal point and presents water as a continuous field.
