Surface And Depth #285 is held almost entirely within blue. From a lighter, luminous band at the top, the colour deepens through ultramarine toward a dark base, while darker forms at the centre suggest something seen below the surface. Guillaume Grando builds the work on wood in layers of acrylic and resin, then sands and sculpts them so that the relief reproduces ripples and the reflections they carry. The single hue concentrates attention on what the series title announces: the difference between what lies on the surface and what appears beneath it. For the Biarritz-based artist, a surfer and close observer of the ocean, water is less a motif than a way of working with light.
