In Surface And Depth #04232, a band of pink and violet at the upper edge passes into greys, blacks and muted sand tones. The iridescent passage can be read as the sheen of petrol on the ocean, the film of colour a slick leaves on dark water, and it gives the series' study of surface a less innocent register. Guillaume Grando does not paint the effect as a scene. He constructs it in layers of acrylic and resin on wood, which he sands and sculpts into a relief of ripples, so that actual light completes what the colour begins. The work holds beauty and contamination on the same plane, and leaves the reading open.
