D76 is a compact work from Dylan Martinez's water bag series, 28 cm high. A clear mass of glass occupies the lower half of the form, read by the eye as water, while the upper half is blown and shaped into the thin, creased skin of a plastic bag drawn together at the neck. Martinez trained in glass at Ball State University, where he earned his MFA, and works from his studio in Washington State. His method draws on traditional glassmaking but directs it toward illusion. The object is permanent and dense, yet it holds the image of something that would ordinarily last only an afternoon.
