This El Mar wall piece measures 120 x 80 cm and is shaped from stainless steel by hand, using heat, before being finished in reflective chrome. Its form, wider at the top and tapering below, recalls a fragment of water surface lifted from the sea. Pepe Valenti approaches materials intuitively, exploring their behaviour through physical experiment, and draws on time spent floating in the sea or walking in forests. The work does not depict that experience but reproduces its optical effect: light breaks across the folded surface into many small reflections that move with the viewer and with the time of day.
