D72 belongs to Dylan Martinez's series of glass water bags, sculptures that appear to be plastic bags filled with water and tied at the top. Every part of the work is glass. Martinez first sculpts the solid glass that stands in for water, adds a blown bubble above it and then shapes each fold and wrinkle of the bag by hand, before the piece is annealed and cooled slowly over several days. The result asks the viewer to doubt what the eye reports. Martinez describes his aim as creating situations in which we must question our capacity to navigate between reality and illusion.
