REFLECTION / REFRACTION (Black Smoke) removes the wooden support from Guillaume Grando's practice and leaves resin alone. Cast in a smoked, translucent tone, the panel carries on its surface the rippled relief the artist developed to reproduce the texture of water. Light is no longer only reflected, as in his paintings; it passes through the material, is bent by its varying thickness and projects a shifting pattern onto the surfaces around it. The work therefore extends beyond its own edges, and its image changes with the source and angle of illumination. The two optical terms of the title describe exactly what the object does.
