In REFLECTION / REFRACTION (Clear), Guillaume Grando works with uncoloured resin, so that the piece is defined almost entirely by light. The sheet's undulating relief, modelled on the surface of water, acts as a field of small lenses: it concentrates and disperses the light that crosses it and casts a network of bright lines, similar to those seen on the bed of a shallow sea. The Biarritz-based artist, a surfer and long-time observer of the ocean, isolates here a phenomenon that his paintings on wood suggest pictorially. Without pigment or image, the work makes transparency its subject and treats the shadow it throws as part of the composition.
