At 50 cm in diameter, this is one of the most intimate works in Pepe Valenti's El Mar series. A round plate of stainless steel is shaped by hand with heat into a continuous field of ripples and then copper plated, giving the reflections a warm tone associated, in the series, with the light of sunrise and sunset. The Barcelona-born artist draws his inspiration from raw, untouched matter and time spent in nature, and contrasts it with a highly polished outcome. Here the scale concentrates that contrast: the surface gathers its surroundings into a compact, constantly changing image, as the sea does under low sun.
